Then comes shaping: your chosen nail form — round, square, squoval, almond — created with professional files used in single-direction strokes rather than a back-and-forth sawing motion, which is kinder to the nail edge. Different file grits do different jobs: coarser for reducing length, finer for smoothing and perfecting the shape.
A light buff smooths surface ridges and gives polish an even base. Buffing is deliberately conservative — a little smoothing is useful, over-buffing thins the nail plate, so professional restraint matters here.
Cuticle Care
Cuticle work is the most skill-dependent part of a manicure. A softening solution is applied and given a few minutes to loosen the dead, non-living tissue that builds up on the nail plate. Cuticles are then gently eased back with a wooden or rubber-tipped tool — gently being the operative word, since force here does more harm than good.
Trimming, where needed, addresses only clearly dead tissue and hangnails, using sterilised nippers, and leaves the living cuticle alone. Knowing what to trim and what to leave is precisely what training buys you. The area is finished with cuticle oil or serum massaged in around the nail — a small ritual that keeps the skin around the nails supple and tidy-looking between appointments.
Hand Treatment and Massage
Hand exfoliation with a sugar or salt scrub lifts away dull surface cells and smooths rough patches, with extra attention to knuckles. It also clears the way for moisturiser to sink in properly rather than sitting on top of dry skin.
The massage is many clients' favourite part: five to ten minutes in a standard manicure, working a rich cream or oil into the hands, wrists, and lower forearms. It's unhurried and genuinely relaxing — palms, each finger in turn, wrists, forearms — and it works the moisturiser deep into skin that, for most of us, gets washed a dozen times a day. Polish Application System
Good polish work is systematic. Nails are first wiped with a prep solution to remove any oils, so the polish bonds to a clean surface. Base coat goes on next: it protects the nail from staining by darker colours, evens out minor imperfections, and gives the colour something to grip.
Colour is applied in two thin coats rather than one thick one — thin coats dry more evenly, look smoother, and hold up better. Each coat follows the classic centre-stroke-then-sides pattern for full coverage without flooding the skin or cuticles, with a minute or two between coats.
Top coat seals everything in, adds the glossy finish, and includes "capping" the free edge — wrapping the polish slightly over the nail tip, since edges are where chips usually start. How long any manicure lasts genuinely varies from person to person and depends heavily on what your hands do all day, so we'll never promise a number — but careful application technique is what gives polish its best chance.
