“Not too dark” is a real preference, but it leaves one important question unanswered: what would feel right instead? Before an eyebrow tint appointment, describe the relationship you want between your brows, hair and everyday makeup rather than trying to name a salon shade yourself.
The current treatment list includes Eyebrow Tinting. It does not publish a shade range, so a reference and a short preference card are more useful than guessing what the salon stocks.
Build your shade conversation card
Write one line for each prompt:
| Prompt | Your note |
|---|---|
| My natural brow hair looks… | light, medium or dark to me |
| My head hair is… | natural, coloured, highlighted or changing |
| I want… | softer definition / noticeable definition / unsure |
| I disliked before… | too warm, too cool, too strong or another detail |
| Please keep… | a softer front, visible individual hairs or another preference |
This is not a formula for mixing tint. It is a way to make your starting point visible.
The UK National Occupational Standard for eyelash and eyebrow treatments puts objectives, expectations, hair colour and treatment planning inside the consultation. That supports a proper conversation; it does not prove which colour or result will suit you.
Bring a reference for one detail at a time
A whole-face photograph can accidentally communicate several requests at once: shape, thickness, colour and makeup. Crop your reference to the brows and decide what it demonstrates.
- “I like the softer colour at the front.”
- “I like this level of contrast with the hair.”
- “This is too strong for me, even though I like the shape.”
Avoid presenting somebody else’s photograph as a result you expect to copy. Their natural hair, skin, previous treatments and photograph lighting are different.
Separate colour from missing definition
Tint colours existing brow hair. A pencil or powder can also place temporary colour where you draw it. If your concern is a gap or a tail you usually extend with makeup, say so. That helps separate “I want these hairs more visible” from “I want the outline I draw every morning.”
If you are undecided between a salon tint and daily makeup, use the tint-or-pencil routine guide rather than asking tint to do both jobs.
Try this short request
“I would like my brows to look more defined, but I still want individual hairs to be visible. My hair is currently [natural/coloured], and a previous tint felt [too warm/too strong]. Could we discuss what is realistic before we choose the colour?”
The wording is yours to edit. It does not mean that every part of the request can be achieved.

Frequently asked questions
Q: How do I ask for a natural eyebrow tint?
A: Describe the amount of definition you want, show a reference for colour rather than shape alone, and say what you do not want repeated. The salon still needs to assess what is suitable and possible with its products.
Q: Should eyebrow tint match my head hair?
A: Do not choose from head hair alone. Mention your natural brow colour, any dyed hair and the relationship you want between them, then let the salon discuss the available options.
Q: Can I ask for a lighter result first?
A: You can say that you would rather begin with softer definition, but the salon must confirm what can be achieved with the treatment and products it uses.
